Moving box inventory: photograph what's inside before you tape it

A moving box inventory is a record of what you packed into each box and where that box ended up. With TadaTuck on iPhone, you photograph the items you'll want to find, save them to a storage space named after the box, and update their location when the box moves or gets unpacked.

It's a photo record you keep up yourself. It doesn't scan sealed boxes or check what's inside for you.

"Which box has the kettle?"

First night in the new place. Eleven boxes say KITCHEN in marker. The kettle is in one of them.

A room label tells you where a box should go. It rarely tells you which box holds the thing you need tonight. A few saved records can.

Before you tape the box

Three details, recorded while the box is still open.

A photo of what's inside

Photograph the items you'll want to find again before they go in: the kettle, the router, the folder with the lease. Each one gets its own record with a photo you'll recognize.

You can add items by hand, or let on-device recognition help with the name and category. Cloud AI is optional.

A box name you'd search for

Treat the box as a storage space and give it a name you'd type later: "Kitchen 3, open first" or "Office, cables and chargers". Write the same name on the box. When the record and the cardboard match, you know which one to cut open.

Where the box will sit, if you know

If you already know where the box is going, put that in the name too: "Kitchen 3, storage unit shelf B" or "Office, living room by the window". The record and the cardboard still match.

If you don't know yet, the box name is enough. Add the place to the name after unloading.

Start with boxes that hold small, easy-to-lose items

You won't need a record to find the books. Start with boxes that hold small things you'll want in the first few days: chargers and cables, spare keys, remotes, the screws and tools for the bed frame, paperwork.

A few records for those boxes are a good start. Add the rest later, or don't. New to the idea? See what is a home inventory app?

After you unpack, update the saved location

When the kettle comes out of "Kitchen 3" and goes into the cupboard, change its location to the cupboard. A record is useful when it reflects where you last put the item.

Unpacking is a good moment to do this, because you're already deciding where each thing lives in the new place.

Same habit for attic and closet storage

Not every box is part of a move. Winter clothes, holiday decorations, and spare bedding go into boxes on a high shelf and stay there for months.

The steps don't change. Photograph what goes in, name the box, note the shelf. When something comes out, update it. The same idea for a single drawer is on Where did I put it?, and home inventory without a spreadsheet explains why a photo and a place can be enough without a template.

FAQ

Is this a full moving checklist?

No. It's a photo record of belongings and where you put them.

Does TadaTuck know what's in a box automatically?

No. You add items and their locations, and keep them updated. The record reflects what you entered; it does not check the contents for you.

Do I need to list every item in the box?

No. Prioritize things you'll need to find soon or that are easy to lose.

What if I restack boxes in storage?

Update the record when you move a box, so it matches where things are now. If the place is in the box name, change the name.

Do I need Cloud AI?

No. You can add items manually or use on-device recognition, then organize and search your records without enabling Cloud AI.

Photograph the box before you tape it
